Dove Lake is one of those places that photographs cannot contain. The mist comes in low off the water. The little boatshed at Dove Lake is perhaps the most photographed structure in Tasmania — and for good reason. At first light, with Cradle Mountain reflected in the utterly still water and the morning mist sitting in the valley below the dolerite peaks, it is one of the most beautiful scenes available to anyone willing to set an alarm. This original photograph captures it in that precise condition: the lake like glass, the hut dark against the mountains, the sky still holding the last of the night.

Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area — one of the last great temperate wilderness regions on earth, covering nearly 1.4 million hectares of ancient dolerite mountains, buttongrass moorlands, and dense rainforest. It has been largely unchanged for ten thousand years.

At its northern entrance, Dove Lake sits in a glacially carved cirque at 934 metres above sea level. The lake is fed almost entirely by rainfall and snowmelt from the dolerite peaks of Cradle Mountain above it. In still conditions — which happen most reliably in the hour before dawn — the water becomes an almost perfect mirror. The boatshed that sits at the lake's edge, built in the 1940s, appears in that reflection as clearly as it does in the sky above.

This is the view that has made Dove Lake one of the most visited — and most attempted to photograph — destinations in Australia. Most photographs of it fail. The light changes too quickly. The mist burns off. The first walkers arrive and break the silence. Getting the image right requires presence, patience, and the willingness to be cold.
